Creative
Hooked Purses with Rose Raymond,
Nashua, New Hampshire
Awaken your creative instincts and enjoy the fun of
designing and making your own distinctive, hooked purse.
Students have a choice of making smaller coin purses,
which are designed and hooked during the class or a
standard-sized purse, which require some hooking prior
to class. Rose shares techniques and tips through
hands-on learning, illustrations, and in-depth
discussions of the process of designing, hooking and
assembling hooked purses. Topics include design flow;
choice of materials; the use of purse frames and purse
hardware; purse construction; and the sequence of purse
assembly. Rose offers patterns for sale or students may
design their own. Prior to class, students will be
contacted with a supply list and further details. Rose
has been hooking for more than 20 years and is best
known for designing and making unique, one-of-a-kind
hooked purses and experimenting with mixed media. To see

Running
with Braiding with Kris
McDermet,Dummerston, Vermont
Kris began braiding and hooking in the late 1970’s. She
teaches classes in both braiding and hooking in Vermont
and throughout the country, and recently published a
book, Combining Rug Hooking & Braiding: Basics, Borders
& Beyond. Her interest is in combining the two art/craft
forms to make interesting shapes for the wall or floor.
The colors, designs, and textures of hand dyed and ‘as
is’ wool complement both mediums. She developed a
joining technique to create endless design and textural
possibilities, so that the delicacy of the hooking is
set off by the boldness of the braiding. For this class
students arrive with 3 hooked shapes-1circle and 2
diamonds. Instruction includes basic braiding
techniques, padding and lining the hooked pieces, then
braiding around the joined sections.
