The Teachers and Class Descriptions

Patriotic Parade rug, hooked by LisanneB & B- Backgrounds and Borders with Lisanne Miller, Canton, Mississippi
Rug hookers are often challenged with making backgrounds interesting, and hooking borders that are different and exciting. Lisanne offers guidance and suggestions in choosing colors, adding textures, and discussing border designs that enhance each individual rug. See how using 8 to 12 different colors can create a background that enhances you work! Bring a rug in process or start a new one from scratch by doing the background first. Lisanne also asks the question, “what do you do with ugly wool?” She invites each student to bring a ‘fat quarter’ of the their least-favorite wool, and she’ll show you how you can incorporate it in a rug. Join Lisanne for loads of ideas and inspiration.

DESIGNS, COLORING & LETTERING with Pris Buttler,Gainseville, GA
Pris offers an Open Class to any and all- beginners and experienced rug hookers. She covers general hooking techniques; designing; lettering; and color planning. Pris encourages students to design their own pattern or choose one from her catalog. Students will have the opportunity to learn to design a pattern, transfer it to rug hooking backing, and with Pris’s guidance, color plan that pattern and start hooking. Students will go home with a clear plan as to the direction their rug is to take.
Pris is an artist with many years of experience as a graphic designer and rug-hooking teacher. After receiving her Graphic Design degree, she worked for ‘Current Greeting Cards’, ran her own design company in Georgia, and was a freelance graphic designer for many companies nationwide. She has extensive training as a folk and fine artist, studying with many well-known art teachers in all subjects of representational oil painting. When not teaching rug hooking she is a full time working artist. Pris has been featured in Celebrations X and XI and Rug Hooking Magazine. She’s a member of the Atlanta ATHA Dogwood Chapter, Crescent Lane Rug Hookers of Athens, GA, and Southern Belles, a McGown Guild. PrisButtler.com.

‘MAD FOR MAUD’ Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis Designs with Pam Langdon, Ottawa Canada
Pam invites you on a ‘Mad for Maud’ journey so that you can create a piece of folk art history based on works of Maud Lewis, one of Canada’s most outstanding Maritime folk artists (1903-1970). Poverty stricken throughout her married life and facing significant physical challenges, Maud magically created universally appealing and whimsical scenes of her life in rural Nova Scotia. These works are alive with color, movement and intimacy, evoking memories of childhoods. Learn about the beauty of Maud’s art and the highlights of her exceptional life. Discover hooking techniques that capture the charm of her work. There are a significant number of Maud Lewis-based designs waiting to be hooked by the experienced rug hooker in fine cut or wide cut using cut wool, yarn or alternative fibers. These designs can be viewed and purchased online at Highland Heart Hookery, HookaRug.com
Pam Langdon from Ottawa, Canada, has been a certified Ontario Hooking Craft Guild (OHCG) teacher since 2006. Her penchant and enthusiasm for teaching includes courses on color, dyeing, 3D geometrics, as well as a particular interest in teaching students about the life and art of Maud Lewis and how to re-create her work. Pam’s informative and interactive approach creates an enjoyable atmosphere for working, learning and success. Email Pam at pamlangdon@sympatico.ca

MELLOW TEXTURES IN WIDE CUT with Wendy Miller, Attica Indiana
Wendy specializes in wide cut and primitive designs, and works almost exclusively in an #8.5 cut. She requires that students work in at least a #8 cut (1/4" wide strip) or wider. She helps students incorporate textured and plaid wool using a primitive color palette. Rugs have an instant old age appearance to them, through color, texture and value.
All color planning will be done in class. Students go through the color planning process with Wendy individually, so each will learn her method of selecting the colors and textures of wool. Because individual instruction is a portion of this class, it is suggested that students bring along a small project to work on while they wait, although Wendy welcomes students to watch and listen as she confers with each student. Wendy’s rugs have been pictured in Celebrations and Rug Hooking Magazine and she’s the owner of TheRedSaltBox.com
